Barons Of Hell interview

As you may have noticed after the quakecon predictions I posted , a number of euro rtcw fans made it blatently clear that they wanted to hear some stuff about who will be representing them at quakecon. Inquisitive myself as to what big bad europe was bringing to the table this summer, I went and located bully (of boh fame) for a quick interview to give him his thoughts on the whole quakecon event. He fielded a number of questions regaurding the current state of rtcw, his thoughts on american teams and their style of play as well as his thoughts on BOH's chances at quakecon.
burnzone: when was boh founded? who are your key players and what are their gaming backgrounds? what is the clan history?
boh|bully - BoH started in Germany about 7 years ago. The name "Barons of Hell" comes from a monster in the game "DooM". It was founded by some friends who all live in Cologne (Germany) while they were playing DooM. After DooM died down, they started playing QuakeWorld. After that, most of us went on to Quake3 team dm/dueling - and finally RTCW. We picked up RTCW as soon as the first demo of it came out and have been playing it ever since. We mainly picked it up because Quake3 was getting old and we needed something to hold us down until DooM3.
burnzone: Are you all local? do you lan matches? what method of communication do you use in game? (ie binds or voice com - or lan just yelling at eachother =) )
boh|bully - Not really local, but we live close to each other. Most of our members live in Cologne or Oldenburg, but we dont actually lan a lot, we prefer playing from our homes and using voice com instead (no bindings).
burnzone: Looking at the quakecon bracket for the online qualifier, its safe to assume you will make the top 16. In which case, will you definetly be making the trip?
boh|bully - Well, first things first =) we need to qualify. But to answer your question, if we do make the top 16, we are 99 percent sure we will be attending Quakecon.
burnzone: Are you sponsored? or will you be paying for the trip yourselves?
boh|bully - A sponsor will be paying for us, but its still unoffical.
burnzone: Are you concerned at all about the overseas ping, and do you feel that it will affect your game that much?
boh|bully - well of course ping matters, so yes we are concerned a little bit. Basically were just going to have to tighten up our teamwork and practice a lot. We will be prepared though.
burnzone: Have you watched any demos from the american rtcw scene? if so, how do you believe their style differs from the euro style of play. Also, do you believe any style is superior? Are there any teams that you perticularly respect or believe are going to do well at quakecon?
boh|bully> Yes, I watched many american demos. Well, I cant say which style is better - we will have to play first before I can decide =). I kind of see a little aim advantage in the euro teams - but other then that I dont see a lot of differences. Oh, another thing - we are used to playing MP mode. So we play much more defensive then american teams. Americans could lose a round but still win - if we lost we lost =)
burnzone: Do you think thats a advantage or disadvantage for you?
boh|bully - Well its both, but im leaning twords disadvantage because maps like sub and base are very new to us because they were rather pointless in mp mode - so we didnt play them a lot.
burnzone: How are you preparing for quakecon and for the american teams that you will have to face there? and who are you most eager to play?
boh|bully - Well, we are on holliday (summer vacation) now, so we are playing a lot every day in preperation for Quakecon. We will definetly be prepared. As far as the matches I really want to see, I cant wait to see the american teams play the european teams. Mainly we just want to see a lot of great games played with great teams. Nothing really specific. =)
burnzone: How do you think BoH will perform at quakecon?
boh|bully - Well, our main goal is to win, and I believe we have a chance to do it. Were going to focus on one game at a time and try to play our best every game. In the end well see what the result is. Hopefully we do well!
